USG 20 a few more questions

Here is my current setup: USG20 LAN1 goes to an AirPort Extreme in bridge mode. It handles the Wi-Fi and a few ethernet connections. No other ports on the USG20 are in use apart from the WAN port of course. My Mac Pro has two ethernet ports, Ethernet1 port is used for all traffic to-from the Mac and Ethernet2 port us is used exclusively by a Virtual Machine running all traffic over a VPN. Since i connected the USG20 i noticed that a lot of the traffic to my Virtual Machine is being blocked. I thought a VPN is a tunnel from the VM to the VPN server so how come the USG20 firewall is able to block some of it's traffic? It shouldn't be able to see what goes on in that VPN tunnel should it? Now i'm thinking; connect Ethernet2 to a LAN2 port on the USG20 and set up an allow everything to port 4500 (configured the VPN client to use this as the local port). Does this make sense or am i overcomplicating things? As i am not even at the rookie stage yet when it comes to understanding this box there may be an easier way to get this done but i figured putting that cable on LAN2 and separate it from everything else would simplify things. Any thoughts on how to best accomplish unhindered VPN traffic?
