I'm connecting a Windows Server 2012 via L2TP/IPsec. After long hours I finally made it work. Suddenly, after further configuration, it stopped. I reversed the config changes, still didn't work. On the Zywall I continued getting the log message:
alert L2TP Over IPSec User ?\xxxx has been denied from L2TP service.(Incorrect Username or Password).
I double checked login credentials, user names, retyped passwords but nothing worked. I did however react to the ?\ part of the error message, I thought perhaps there was some strange domain verification going on. But the server is not part of a domain and I hadn't changed the domain field in the authentication settings dialog of the VPN connection on the server. When double checking the field was empty.
I'm connecting via TeamViewer from a Mac, sometimes invisible characters are passed through when copying/pasting between environments. I also noticed the fact that when the cursor was in the dialog field it turned to a different color, but I thought that it was just a graphics compression thing.
In any case, I hit ctrl-a, delete and backspace many times. The cursor was back to black. Save and reconnect. Voilà, connection up again.
